How to Prepare for Your LASIK Surgery

Preparing for LASIK Surgery

New York City LASIK surgeon Dr. Gregory Pamel is committed to providing his patients with the most up-to-date information they need to make the best decisions regarding their vision and eye health. If you are considering or getting ready to undergo LASIK surgery, Dr. Pamel would like to share tips on how to prepare for the procedure.

Before Your LASIK Surgery

Dr. Pamel will provide you with a detailed list of instructions to follow prior to your procedure. In the meantime, he recommends you read the following tips and write down any questions you may want to ask him or his staff during your in-office consultation.

  • If you wear soft contact lenses, you will need to stop wearing them two weeks before your surgery. Rigid gas permeable (GP) contact lenses will need to be taken out three to four weeks before surgery.
  • Pick up prescription medicine in advance so it is ready for you to take immediately after your surgery.
  • Enlist a friend or family member to drive you to and from your surgery (you will not be able to drive until your doctor clears you to do so).
  • Remove all makeup and lotions from the face. You can use artificial tears to flush debris from the eyes.
  • Do not wear jewelry the morning of surgery.
  • Continue taking medications the morning of surgery, unless directed otherwise by our team.

After Your LASIK Surgery

The success of your LASIK surgery is dependent on your recovery. Here are a few tips to ensure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Once you’re home, rest in a comfortable position for the remainder of the day.
  • Take medication as directed. Do not take any over-the-counter medications unless prescribed or cleared by our team.
  • Wear your protective eye shield for as long as our team recommends.
  • Do not rub or touch your eyes.
  • Avoid exercise, swimming and other activities that can hurt your eyes until our team clears you.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments.
