Custom LASIK Offers Better Vision with Less Risk of Glare

Custom LASIK in Astoria Custom LASIK is vision correction with the most advanced laser technology available, the Allegretto Wavelight. While traditional LASIK focuses on your vision prescription, Custom LASIK measures your eye using wavefront technology and creates a 3D map for more individualized results that reduce side effects, such as poor night vision and glare. Dr. Gregory J. Pamel offers Custom LASIK and was one of the first eye surgeons in New York to incorporate the technology into his practice, Pamel Vision & Laser Group.

How Does Custom LASIK with Allegretto Wavelight Work?

This laser technology is calibrated to your unique refractive errors (lower-order aberrations and high-order aberrations). High-order aberrations are irregularities with the cornea, including shadows, halos, glare, and decreased contrast sensitivity. You may not notice these vision problems, but they affect the quality of your vision.

Custom LASIK uses an aberrometry device to map the eye. This wavefront technology shines a light ray into the eye that reflects off the back of the eye, through the pupil, and back into the device. The wave of light is transformed into a unique pattern that measures lower- and higher-order aberrations. The information is used to create a 3D map that is transferred to the laser and matched to the eye’s position during LASIK surgery.

The Allegretto Wavelight laser constantly monitors the eyeball position during eye surgery, measuring its location every four to six milliseconds, then adjusts internal mirrors accordingly and double-checks the eye position. The laser stops and recalibrates if the eye is misaligned or moves too quickly.

This FDA-approved laser technology offers more personalized LASIK and is more likely to lead to 20/20 or better vision.

Benefits of Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK improves visual acuity and vision quality by reducing or eliminating nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, contrast sensitivity, poor night vision, and other abnormalities. Before Custom LASIK, conventional LASIK surgery, contact lenses, and glasses corrected vision based on your prescription. Measuring and mapping the eye offers better vision outcomes that incorporate higher-order aberrations, making adverse side effects less likely.

Patients with nearsightedness and farsightedness tend to achieve better night vision with fewer instances of halos and glare around bright lights with Custom LASIK, and nearsighted patients report improved light sensitivity. One year after their procedure, 93% of patients see just as well or better than they did with corrective eyewear before LASIK with Allegretto Wavelight. Ninety-eight percent of patients achieved 20/40 vision and could drive without glasses or contact lenses.

Are You a Candidate for Custom LASIK?

You must have stable vision for at least one year before considering Custom LASIK, which means most eligible patients are over 21. You should not be pregnant or have any eye or health conditions that affect the safety or efficacy of the procedure, such as dry eyes, glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Most patients interested in Custom LASIK will meet the candidacy requirement, but some may need a different procedure, such as refractive lens exchange for presbyopia.
