Selecting the IOL That’s Right for You

Cataract surgery is the process of removing the eye’s clouded lens and implanting a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Dr. Gregory Pamel offers a wide range of IOLs available with features to suit various needs and lifestyles. The technology has advanced considerably since the development of the first FDA-approved IOL, which has led to the creation of many unique choices.
Prior to your cataract surgery, Dr. Pamel will meet with you to go over your options and help you select the best fit. To help you start thinking about your choices, he provides a brief overview of the different IOL options below.
Monofocal IOLs
Monofocal IOLs are basic lenses usually covered by Medicare and other health insurance plans. They are designed to correct your distant or near vision, but not both. Patients that select monofocal IOLs usually opt to correct their distance vision and then compensate by wearing reading glasses to see up close.
Multifocal IOLs
Multifocal IOLs are upgraded or premium lenses that allow you to see objects clearly at all distances without the need for visual aids. If you want minimal dependence on glasses or contacts after cataract surgery, you should consider multifocal IOLs.
Accommodating IOLs
Accommodating IOLs are another type of premium lenses that provide a full range of clear vision at all distances by mimicking the eye’s natural process of accommodation. A healthy eye’s lens “flexes” from its resting position to focus on near objects. Through their design and special supporting legs called “haptics” that hold the lens in place, accommodating IOLs shift slightly forward to increase the focusing power of the eye on near objects, providing excellent near vision after cataract surgery.
Toric IOLs
Toric IOLs may be a good option if you have a pre-existing visual condition known as astigmatism, in which your cornea is irregularly curved, causing you to experience blurred vision. Toric lenses are designed with different focusing powers in different portions of the lens, and are carefully positioned within the eye to ensure proper astigmatism correction.
